Getting in the Christmas spirit this week with some of Sufjan Stevens’ Christmas album this week. The wife and I went tohts visit my parents for Thanksgiving, so as soon as we got back home we unpacked, setup the Christmas tree and hung some lights.
Also a little Clash in there from over the break while working on my car. Other than that, not a whole lot new going on.

VÄNDER VANDER: Morning Reading
1. Rebranding Playboy
Alex Cornell has been working on a class assignment for his MFA class to reinvigorate a brand that is “dead, dying or defunct”. After tossing out initial ideas to rework No Fear, he settled on Playboy.
To keep up with the increasing trashiness of the American Men’s magazine, Playboy has been forced to reposition itself as “one of the boys” as it were, and is...

Hope you’re all having a great weekend and enjoying some down time.
If you’ve got a free hour or so to kill, I recommend this neat little documentary on tweed from the BBC. Haven’t yet found parts two and three, but it’s still worth watching none the less.
Enjoy.
(Thanks 10Engines)

New Old Work: My wedding website and invites
See the whole project here.
This is another one I’ve been wanting to post for awhile but had to hold off on until now. Now that the wedding is over I figure it’s ok to show how everything turned out.
To give you a little background, the theme of the wedding was vintage travel. Allie and I both love to travel and have a love for well made old crap. So for our invites, we bought some...

If swearing offends you, you may not want to watch this.
If, however, you hate shitty design and Blippo Bold, then you’ll probably enjoy this. It’s been out for awhile, but it’s still good.
Aaron Draplin of Draplin Design on why America is F*cked… (Graphically at least).

Please excuse my mess
You may have noticed some issues over the past few days with getting to the blog, rss feeds, etc.
I’ve moved the blog out of the subdomain it was on and onto the root at svanderm.com. Since I used to have my portfolio on the root, it’s now at work.svanderm.com.
There were some DNS issues that should have worked themselves out by now. And I’ve also updated the feed, so if you...

Peterbilt turns 70 this year
Selectism has a great post on Peterbuilt today. Founded in 1939, Peterbilt turns 70 this year. Despite the fact that there were other companies with more experience making trucks for the same purpose, Peterbilt was able to distinguish itself by focusing on quality rather than quantity. As a result they’ve developed a pretty loyal following over the years.
Being that my grandfather was a...

ABCs, ABCs, ABCs!
P - Is for Piracy and V - Is for Virus… everyone knows that.
Finally got back on it and knocked out a bunch of pages for the ABC book. I was able to get N, P, S, T, V and X done tonight, which feels great. It sucks when the projects you love to work on the most are the ones that get done last. I’ve been itching to finishing this thing up for quite awhile but with how crazy...

New Old Work: Ghosts of the Coast
This is something that’s been finished for awhile, I just kept forgetting to post. Each year North Carolina’s Crystal Coast does a promotion called Ghosts of the Coast. Not many people know about a lot of the crazy history the place has, so it’s a good chance to highlight things like the capture of Blackbeard, wild shipwreck surviving horses that roam the area and a little girl...

Music Monday: November 16TH, 2009
I’m a day late, but wanted to post anyway. This doesn’t seem to be entirely accurate, but I guess it’s close enough. For some reason I’d never come across Junior Kimbrough until yesterday, so I’ve been loving that. Driving back to Tallahassee from Key Largo this weekend I rediscovered The Black Keys which has put me on a blues / blues rock kick. Last week it was an...
New Work: Marissa's Gamer's Alphabet book...
Here’s a little preview of something I just finished working on. These are from the last of my pages for the Gamer’s Alphabet book collaboration Fazy Luckers is putting together for Marissa’s Bunny. Marissa’s the daughter of one of the members of the site and suffers from infantile spasms. This is round two of the fund raising collaborations we’ve put together. Last year was the Rabbit...

New Work: Vision Series Promos
Just finished up some promo graphics for Four Oaks Church’s upcoming Vision Series.
You can see the rest of them on my portfolio.
Halloweenksgivingmasyears Insanity
For some reason it seems that every year the months from Halloween to New Year’s are packed with more work than is humanly possible. Which is complicated by the fact that clients are usually out on vacation yet want you to be working while they’re out and not take one yourself.
THIS year though, I’m doing my best to plan timelines and my time better so that it’s a little...
